Greek Islands in May: Weather, Sea Temperature and Which Islands Are Open
Last updated: October 2026

Long, bright days, green hillsides and empty beaches, with a sea that’s still waking up.
May is one of the best months to visit the Greek islands, as long as you know what you’re getting. The weather is warm and usually dry, the days are long, the hillsides are still green, and the summer crowds haven’t arrived. Hotels, tavernas and ferries are open on the main islands. The catch is the sea: it’s still cool at the start of the month and only becomes comfortable for most people towards the end.
For 2027 there’s one more thing to know: Greek Orthodox Easter falls on 2 May 2027, so the first weekend of the month will be Greece’s biggest holiday. This guide covers the weather and sea temperatures (early vs late May), Easter, crowds, ferries, what’s open and which islands suit May best. It follows the same format as our September and October guides, so you can compare months easily.
Quick answer: is May a good time for the Greek islands?
Yes, especially for sightseeing, walking and island hopping. Expect daytime highs of about 22–24°C, little rain and very long days.
Swimming: the sea is around 17–19°C in early May and about 19–22°C by the end of the month. Bracing, then pleasant. Rhodes and Crete are the warmest.
Best half: late May for beaches; early May for Easter atmosphere (but book ahead, as Greeks travel that weekend).
Best islands: Crete and Rhodes for warmth; Naxos and Paros for an all-round trip; Santorini for sightseeing before the summer crush; Milos from late May for boat trips.
May weather: air and sea temperatures, early vs late month
The table below uses long-term station averages from the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) for air temperature and rain days, and sea-surface data from seatemperature.info. As in our September and October guides, the early- and late-May sea ranges show the coolest and warmest daily readings recorded on those dates over roughly the last ten years, so they give a realistic spread rather than one number.
| Island group (station) | Avg high / low (air) | Rain days (monthly rainfall) | Sea, early May (1–7) | Sea, late May (25–31) | Sea, monthly avg |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cyclades (Naxos) | 22.1°C / 15.7°C | 3.6 (10.6 mm) | about 16.5–19.7°C | about 18.9–22.1°C | 18.9°C |
| Western Cyclades (Milos) | about 23°C / 16°C* | about 2* | about 16.9–20.3°C | about 19.2–22.1°C | 19.2°C |
| Crete (Heraklion) | 23.6°C / 15.1°C | 4.6 (13.4 mm) | about 17.2–20.5°C | about 19.4–22.6°C | 19.6°C |
| Dodecanese (Rhodes) | 24.1°C / 16.3°C | 4.4 (16.4 mm) | about 17.6–21.6°C | about 20.0–24.1°C | 20.4°C |
| Ionian (Corfu) | 24.0°C / 13.3°C | 7.7 (36.5 mm) | not collected (shown for contrast: wetter and cooler at night) | ||

Island stations are coastal, so hill villages feel cooler, especially at night.
What the averages don’t show:
- The sea warms through the month. At Naxos, the daily reading in 2026 went from about 17°C on 1 May to about 20.7°C on 31 May. That’s the difference between a quick, gasping dip and a proper swim.
- The south-east is warmest. Rhodes and Heraklion average about 1½–2 degrees warmer by day than Naxos, and their sea warms fastest. If swimming matters most, go there or go late in the month.
- Evenings are cool. Night-time lows of 15–16°C feel fresh on a windy harbour front. Bring a layer.

Wind, rain and daylight
Wind: usually the calmest month
The meltemi, the strong summer north wind, generally builds from June. The meteo.gr / National Observatory of Athens explainer puts its peak between mid-June and early September. HNMS’s long-term averages for Naxos show May with the lowest mean wind of the year, and the same is true at Heraklion. That makes May a good month for small boat trips and for beaches that are too windy in August. Windy spells still happen, so don’t plan a tight same-day ferry connection to a flight.
Rain
Rain is uncommon. HNMS averages show about 3½ to 4½ rain days in May in the Cyclades, Crete and Rhodes, usually short showers. The Ionian islands, such as Corfu, are noticeably wetter. Showers are more likely early in the month.
Daylight
May has some of the longest days of the year. In Athens in 2027, the sun sets at 8:15pm on 1 May and 8:40pm on 31 May, and day length grows from about 13¾ hours to about 14½ hours (timeanddate.com). Islands further east, such as Rhodes, see sunset a little earlier by the clock. You get long afternoons for beaches and walks, and dinner in daylight.
Greek Easter 2027: 30 April to 3 May
Greek Orthodox Easter Sunday is on 2 May 2027. Good Friday is 30 April and Easter Monday, a public holiday, is 3 May. Easter is the biggest celebration of the Greek year, and it’s a wonderful time to be on an island: candlelit processions on Good Friday, the midnight service and fireworks on Saturday night, and lamb roasting on Sunday.

What it means for your trip:
- Book early for that weekend. Many Greeks travel home or to the islands, so ferries and flights from Athens fill up, especially on the Thursday and Friday before Easter and the Monday after.
- Some things close. Expect shorter opening hours on Good Friday morning and some closures on Easter Sunday and Monday. Restaurants are often busy with family lunches.
- May Day moves in 2027. The 1 May Labour Day holiday falls on Holy Saturday, so by law it will be moved to another working day by ministerial decision. The new date hadn’t been announced when we wrote this in October 2026, so check before you plan around it.
Whit Monday (Agiou Pnevmatos), the next long weekend, falls on 21 June 2027, so the rest of May has no national holidays.
Crowds and prices: early vs late May
Early May is quiet on most islands, apart from the Easter weekend in 2027. Beaches are often almost empty, and popular villages and viewpoints are easy to enjoy. Late May is busier as the season builds, but it’s still far calmer than July and August.
Prices are usually lower than in peak summer, and room choice is wide. How much lower depends on the island, the property and the dates, so we won’t give a made-up percentage. Compare the same room type for your actual dates. For a month-by-month view, see our cheapest time to visit the Greek islands guide, and for more ways to save, Greek islands on a budget.
One exception is Santorini, where cruise ships call from spring onwards, so Fira and Oia can still be busy in the middle of the day. Go early or late.

Ferries in May: the summer network switches on
The main conventional ferries to Paros, Naxos, Santorini, Mykonos, Milos, Syros and Crete run all year. May is when the high-speed boats and seasonal routes come back, and the network gets busier week by week. Using 2026 as an example (2027 timetables weren’t published when we wrote this):
- Seajets’ Piraeus – Serifos – Sifnos – Milos high-speed line ran from 3 April to 31 October 2026 (ferries.gr).
- Seajets’ Olympic Champion Jet made its first sailing of the 2026 season on 29 April, on the Piraeus – Syros – Mykonos – Naxos – Ios – Santorini route (Cyclades Live).
- The daily Milos – Santorini high-speed service (Seajets, via Folegandros) started on 22 May 2026 and ran until late September (ferries.gr). Before that, Milos–Santorini relied on a slower conventional ship once or twice a week.
- Rafina – Naxos sailings were listed as running April to October in 2026 (Ferryhopper).
So in May, island hopping between the big islands is easy, but some direct hops between smaller islands only start in the second half of the month. Check your exact dates, and remember that Easter weekend boats sell out. Read Greek island ferries for beginners and our guide to island hopping from Athens before you book.
What’s open in May
On the main islands (Crete, Rhodes, Santorini, Naxos, Paros, Mykonos, Milos and Syros), most hotels, tavernas, shops and car hire offices are open by May. What’s still waking up:
- Beach bars and remote canteens often open gradually through May, with some waiting until June. Organised sunbeds may not be out on every beach early in the month.
- Boat trips are running. Milos operators run Kleftiko day trips from April to October, though the sea can still be choppy.
- Samaria Gorge in Crete has an official season of 1 May to 31 October, but the actual opening depends on conditions after the winter: in 2026 it opened on 19 May. Check the park’s announcements before you plan around it.
- Nightlife on Mykonos and in Paros’s Naoussa ramps up towards late May and June. If clubs are the point of the trip, go later.
- Small islands such as the Small Cyclades are quieter, and a few places only open from June.

Best Greek islands to visit in May
| Island | Why it works in May | Watch out for | Best half |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crete | Warm, big and varied; gorges, beaches, food; Samaria Gorge’s season starts in May (it opened on 19 May in 2026) | Long drives; plan a base or two | Either |
| Rhodes | The warmest sea of the islands we track; medieval Old Town | Further from the Cyclades | Either |
| Naxos | Green interior for hiking, sandy beaches, everything open | Sea still cool early in the month | Late |
| Paros | Pretty towns, easy ferries, Antiparos day trips | Naoussa nightlife not yet in full swing | Late |
| Santorini | Caldera views and sunsets before the summer crush | Cruise-ship crowds at midday; it’s a sightseeing island, not a beach one | Early |
| Milos | Calm seas for boat trips, quiet coves | Cool water early on; direct Santorini boats only from late May (2026) | Late |
| Syros | A real town that’s lively all year; great ferry hub | Beaches are pleasant rather than famous | Either |
| Amorgos | Superb hiking in mild weather | Fewer ferries than the big islands | Either |
First-timers, couples and quiet picks
Best Greek islands for a first visit in May
Naxos and Paros, linked by a short ferry, give you beaches, villages and easy logistics. Add Santorini for two nights of caldera views. Our best islands for first-time visitors guide explains why.
Best Greek islands for couples in May
Santorini is at its most enjoyable before summer, and Milos is lovely for boat days in late May. More ideas in best Greek islands for couples.
Quietest Greek islands in May
Amorgos, Sifnos and the Small Cyclades are calm and green in May, and great for walking. Check ferry days carefully, as these islands have fewer sailings than the big hubs.
Sample May itineraries
7 days: Naxos and Paros (works all month)
Three nights on Paros, four on Naxos. Walk the old paths between Lefkes and the coast on Paros, and the mountain villages on Naxos, while it’s cool. See our 10-day Paros and Naxos itinerary for the longer version, or the 7-day itinerary. Adding Milos? Compare all three in Naxos vs Paros vs Milos, and for bases see where to stay in Naxos.
10 days, late May: Milos, Santorini, Naxos
Four nights on Milos for the boat trip and beaches, three on Santorini, three on Naxos. In 2026, the direct high-speed Milos–Santorini boat started on 22 May, so this route works best after that. Can’t fit both? See Milos vs Santorini.
10 days, warm-water trip: Crete and Rhodes
Six nights on Crete, then four on Rhodes. These are the warmest seas in May. Sky Express flies direct between Heraklion and Rhodes, while the Blue Star ferry (via Kasos, Karpathos and Chalki) takes around 12 hours and runs only a couple of times a week, so flying is usually easier. Check both for your dates.
What to pack for May
- A light jacket or fleece for evenings and ferry decks
- Swimwear, plus water shoes for rocky entries
- Sun cream and a hat: the spring sun is strong even when the air feels mild
- Walking shoes for village paths and hiking
- Something smart-casual if you’ll join Easter celebrations

Our recommendation
Go in May if you want warm days, long evenings, quiet villages and easy travel, and you don’t mind a cool first swim. For beaches, aim for the second half of the month or head south to Crete and Rhodes. For atmosphere, Easter weekend (30 April to 3 May 2027) is unforgettable, as long as you book early. And if you’d like warmer water and are flexible, compare with September.
